New Snowden saga evidence frustrates detractors

After his revelatory disclosures four years ago, it was believed that former NSA contractor Edward Snowden went into hiding for 11 days in Hong Kong. Conspiracy theorists imagined 11 days of intrigue and mischief, but new evidence dispels these notions and gives an account of his whereabouts during that time. RT correspondent Alexey Yaroshevsky has the story.

Snowden says he lives an ordinary life in Moscow

Former U.S. National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden said on Wednesday (December 10) that he was leading an ordinary life in Moscow, where he has been living for over a year.

Snowden caused an international uproar in 2013 when he disclosed details of the extent of surveillance and electronic monitoring by the NSA and its British equivalent, the General Communications Headquarters.

He was offered a temporary asylum in Moscow and later a three-year residency permit.

"I'm doing quite well; I live an ordinary life. I ride the Moscow underground like everybody else. The only difference between my life before and now is, obviously, that I'm not living in my home. I'm not able to return," Snowden said, addressing a conference in Paris from Moscow.

The conference on data surveillance was organised by rights group Amnesty International.

The former NSA contractor said mass surveillance had never helped in preventing terrorist acts.

"Every time that those programmes have been reviewed, we have found that in fact they never stopped a single imminent terrorist attack," he said.

Snowden said he no longer had any access to U.S. classified information.

"I destroyed my own access when I went to Hong Kong. Everything had been provided to the journalists. So I can't break news. That's the role of the press, that's not the role of myself as a whistleblower," he said.

Snowden said he would love to go back to the United States.

Whistleblower Snowden Testifies on Mass Surveillance at Council of Europe

US whistleblower Edward Snowden gives testimony to a parliamentary hearing on mass surveillance at the Council of Europe and says the global community must develop new norms of action to challenge mass surveillance.

Full Story:

Former US National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden gave testimony on Tuesday to a parliamentary hearing on mass surveillance at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

The US intelligence operative, who spoke from Moscow via live video-link for more than 30 minutes, said that the NSA had deliberately snooped on public bodies and that information being secretly collected on a vast scale by, as he described, the "five I-s" (major, global intelligence services) was not open to approval by public bodies.

"The screening of trillions - and I mean that literally - trillions of private communications for the vaguest indications of association, or some other nebulous, pre-criminal activity, is a violation of the human right to be free from unwarranted interference, to be secure in our communications and our private affairs, and it must be addressed. In these activities routine - I point out, unexceptional activities that happen every day are only a tiny portion of what the 'Five I-s' are secretly doing behind closed doors without the review, consent or approval of any public body," he said.

Snowden added the programs use sophisticated techniques to track trillions of private communications.

"This technology represents the most significant, what I would consider the most significant new threat to civil rights in modern times. The committee should consider what truly 'bad actors' will use these same capabilities for if we allow them to go unchecked and how we will develop enduring norms and technical standards to safeguard against such abuses wherever they occur," he said.

Others at the hearing, organised by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe's Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights, included the former head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service Hansjörg Geiger, who has proposed a 'codex' to regulate intelligence activities between friendly states, and London-based international law professor Douwe Korff.

Snowden fled to Russia in June last year after exposing details of US surveillance programmes and is currently wanted on charges of espionage in the US.

New Snowden Interview The Government Doesn't Want You to See

Media Blacks Out New Snowden Interview The Government Doesn’t Want You to See

This past Sunday evening former NSA contractor Edward Snowden sat down for an interview with German television network ARD. The interview has been intentionally blocked from the US public, with virtually no major broadcast news outlets covering this story. In addition, the video has been taken down almost immediately every time it’s posted on YouTube. In contrast, this was treated as a major political event in both print and broadcast media, in Germany, and across much of the world. In the interview, Mr. Snowden lays out a succinct case as to how these domestic surveillance programs undermines and erodes human rights and democratic freedom.

If this program were to stop, the scientists behind it strongly believe that within just one year the North American climate would spiral out of control, and crop failures would lead to a series of devastating famines that would quickly depopulate urban centers.

Mass surveillance worse than Orwell’s ‘1984,’ Snowden says

A child born today will grow up with no conception of privacy at all,” Snowden said in a Christmas Day message shown by Channel 4. “They’ll never know what it means to have a private moment to themselves, an unrecorded, unanalyzed thought.”“Privacy matters; privacy is what allows us to determine who we are and who we want to be,” he said.

Six months ago, Snowden, a computer analyst turned whistleblower, brought to global attention top-secret National Security Agency (NSA) documents leading to revelations about widespread United States surveillance on phone and internet communications.

In his first TV interview since arriving in Moscow, Snowden lays out his vision for why privacy matters and why he believes mass indiscriminate surveillance by governments of their people is wrong.

Edward Snowden's Christmas Message Transcript

Hi, and Merry Christmas. I'm honoured to have the chance to speak with you and your family this year.

Recently, we learned that our governments, working in concert, have created a system of worldwide mass surveillance, watching everything we do.

Great Britain's George Orwell warned us of the danger of this kind of information. The types of collection in the book — microphones and video cameras, TVs that watch us — are nothing compared to what we have available today. We have sensors in our pockets that track us everywhere we go.

Think about what this means for the privacy of the average person. A child born today will grow up with no conception of privacy at all. They'll never know what it means to have a private moment to themselves — an unrecorded, unanalysed thought. And that's a problem, because privacy matters. Privacy is what allows us to determine who we are and who we want to be.

The conversation occurring today will determine the amount of trust we can place both in the technology that surrounds us and the government that regulates it. Together, we can find a better balance. End mass surveillance. And remind the government that if it really wants to know how we feel, asking is always cheaper than spying.

For everyone out there listening, thank you, and Merry Christmas.

Snowden leak: NSA heavily involved in CIA's drone warfare

The latest leaked documents by National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden show the extent the NSA has been involved with CIA counterterrorism activities, specifically drone strikes. In the past, the drone-strike program was presented as an exclusive initiative of the CIA, but the Snowden documents show that the program depends heavily on the NSA's ability to collect information from e-mails, phone calls and a myriad of other sources. In the meantime, Snowden's father Lon was able to visit the former government contractor in Russia this week, and arrived back in the US on Wednesday. RT's Ameera David has the NSA's response to the leaks about their involvement in drone warfare, as well as the advice Lon Snowden gave his son.

Snowden Flees Hong Kong for Ecuador After US Charges Filed

National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden has fled Hong Kong with the ultimate intentions of reaching Ecuador, a Russian airline source told Reuters on Sunday. WikiLeaks confirmed that Snowden was "bound for a democratic nation via a safe route for the purposes of asylum, and is being escorted by diplomats and legal advisors from WikiLeaks." Hong Kong authorities reportedly let Snowden leave the country after saying that an extradition request from the U.S. was not in full compliance with the country's laws.

The few who understand the system will either be so interested in its profits or so dependent on its favours that there will be no opposition from that class, while on the other hand, the great body of the people mentally incapable of comprehending the tremendous advantage that capital derives from the system will bear its burdens without complaint and perhaps without even suspecting that the system is inimical to their interests.
